KC Symphony brings free concert to Lenexa City Center Sept. 20

The Kansas City Symphony brings a free outdoor chamber music concert to Lenexa on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

The performance at AdventHealth Lenexa City Center, 16950 W. 86th St., is part of the Symphony's Mobile Music Box series. The series uses a portable stage to bring small ensembles of orchestra musicians to parks and public spaces across the Kansas City metro. Kansas City Magazine listed the Lenexa stop among its weekend picks.

The fall 2026 season includes 14 concerts running through late October, according to the Kansas City Symphony. The season opened Sept. 10 at Antioch Park.

Lawn chairs, blankets and picnics are welcome. Pets and children are welcome, too. All performances are weather permitting.

A series born in the pandemic

The Mobile Music Box launched during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to bring live music outdoors. Since then, Symphony musicians have performed at 263 locations across 96 ZIP codes, reaching nearly 80,000 people, according to the Symphony's Sept. 10 announcement.

The Kansas City Symphony is in its 45th season. Its 80 full-time musicians perform under music director Matthias Pintscher, and the orchestra's home base is Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The Symphony serves a metro region of more than 2.2 million people, but the Mobile Music Box takes chamber-sized groups into neighborhoods for free.

Lenexa has hosted the series before. The City of Lenexa promoted a Mobile Music Box concert at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park on April 29. The Sept. 20 concert moves the series to the AdventHealth campus, which opened in July 2025 as Lenexa's first hospital.
