Two cooling centers in Johnson County will open Sept. 7 to give residents a place to escape the heat while libraries and other public buildings are closed for Labor Day.

The Salvation Army at 420 E. Santa Fe St. in Olathe and Christ Community Church at 13330 W. 62nd Terrace in Shawnee will operate from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to a Johnson County Government news release. Both sites will offer phone charging, snacks and cold drinks.

The centers will open regardless of weather.

The supplemental sites fill a gap on holidays, when public buildings that normally serve as cooling centers are closed. Johnson County Library branches, which double as cooling centers during regular hours, will be closed Sunday and Monday for the holiday.

The announcement comes during a late-season heat wave. The Kansas City Star reported Sept. 2 that temperatures in the Kansas City area had reached the mid-90s to around 100 degrees, with heat index values up to 105. An orange Ozone Action Alert was in effect for a second straight day. A heat advisory was in effect through Sept. 4, and was likely to be extended through the weekend.

Johnson County used the same two locations with the same hours on July 4.

The cooling centers are a partnership among Johnson County Government, United Community Services of Johnson County and the host sites. Residents can find additional cooling center locations at jocogov.org/heat-safety-guide or search by area through United Way of Greater Kansas City's 211 lookup.
