The Olathe City Council approved permits for three local businesses at its Tuesday, Oct. 20 meeting. The votes clear the way for a shooting range and a pet boarding facility to keep operating and a volleyball club to build new sand courts.
The council renewed the special use permit for Centerfire Shooting Sports, a 24,700-square-foot facility at 875 N. Jan-Mar Court that houses an indoor shooting range, offices, a retail shop and a warehouse, the Olathe Reporter reported. The new permit covers 10 years. Centerfire first received its special use permit in 2011 and renewed it in 2016.
The council also renewed the permit for The Pet Ranch at 12700 W. 151st St., across from the Johnson County Executive Airport. The boarding facility sits on about 15 acres and has capacity for 142 pets, according to earlier Olathe Reporter coverage of the permit request. The business opened in 2008 and operates 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends.
The Pet Ranch's permit application included plans to add outdoor patios on 13 rooms facing the airport side of the building. A representative for the business wrote in the application that the patios would let dogs "choose to be inside or outside" in nice weather and that expansions would face the airport "to be respectful of the homes near us and for the efficiency of operations."
Some neighbors had raised noise concerns and asked the business to plant more trees, but city staff recommended approval without requiring new landscaping because the property met code.
The third permit went to Nice Digs Volleyball, which received a new special use permit for outdoor recreation on about 1.41 acres northwest of W. Southpark Boulevard and S. Flaming Road. The club plans to build five sand volleyball courts operating Sundays through Fridays from mid-April to mid-October, 4 to 11 p.m., with occasional Saturday tournaments, according to earlier Olathe Reporter coverage. The site would also include parking, restrooms, concessions and a shade structure.
All three permits received unanimous recommendations from the Olathe Planning Commission on Sept. 28 before going to the council, according to city meeting records.
The next Olathe City Council meeting is scheduled for Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at 100 E. Santa Fe.
