Olathe North held a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter on Sept. 25 and lost by one.

The Eagles fell 35-34 to Shawnee Mission Northwest after the Cougars scored 16 unanswered points in the final period. The loss dropped Olathe North to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in Sunflower League play, according to MaxPreps.

Quarterback Chase Cain threw four touchdown passes in the loss, connecting with three different receivers in the second and third quarters.

Olathe North Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Josh Price live-tweeted the scoring drives. The Eagles trailed 6-0 early before Chase Williams punched in an 18-yard touchdown run with 4:20 left in the first quarter to take a 7-6 lead.

Cain took over from there. He hit Jayson Rush on a 45-yard strike with 8:33 left in the second quarter to make it 14-12. A 16-yard scoring pass to A'kobi Bruce pushed the lead to 21-12. Cain found Rush again just before halftime, this time from 48 yards out, and the Eagles went to the break up 27-12.

The third quarter brought more of the same. Cain connected with Anthony Harris on a 6-yard touchdown with 2:43 remaining in the period. Olathe North led 34-19.

Then the fourth quarter happened.

Shawnee Mission Northwest, playing at home, rattled off 16 points while holding the Eagles scoreless. The Sunflower League and The Kansas City Star both confirmed the 35-34 final.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Eagles, including a 49-7 win over Shawnee Mission South on Sept. 18 that lifted them to 2-1 under coach Jason Peete. Olathe North now sits 10th in the Sunflower League district standings. Shawnee Mission Northwest improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in league play, good for fifth in the district.

Olathe North travels to Olathe Northwest on Friday, Oct. 2, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
