Olathe Northwest blanked crosstown rival Olathe South 27-0 on Sept. 4 in the 2026 high school football season opener for both teams.

The Ravens controlled the game from the opening quarter at the Olathe District Activity Center. ONW scored late in the first period to take a 7-0 lead with 25 seconds left on the clock. The Ravens extended their advantage to 10-0 by halftime, adding three points before the break.

The second half belonged to ONW. The Ravens pushed the lead to 17-0 with 8:30 remaining in the third quarter, then added 10 more points to complete the shutout. Score updates posted on X by the Olathe South athletics account tracked the progression throughout the night.

The Sunflower League confirmed the final result on its official account.

The Kansas City Star's Friday night scoreboard listed the score among Kansas results for the evening.

The game kicked off at 8 p.m. under a dangerous heat wave that prompted Olathe-area schools to adjust schedules earlier in the week, as we reported Sept. 3.

KCTV5 reported that officials across the metro monitored conditions as hundreds of players suited up Friday evening.

With the win, Olathe Northwest improved to 1-0. Olathe South dropped to 0-1.

The Ravens were not the only Olathe-area team to open strong. Olathe West topped Shawnee Mission South 52-14, Gardner-Edgerton edged Lawrence 28-26, Spring Hill beat Lansing 48-14 and De Soto defeated Topeka Seaman 48-34, according to the Star's scoreboard. Olathe North fell to Shawnee Mission East 42-28, and Olathe East lost to Shawnee Mission North 24-6.

One Raven to watch as the season unfolds: senior lineman Jake Ruggles, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive and defensive lineman who committed to the University of Sioux Falls on July 13, according to JoCo Today.

Olathe Northwest hosts Blue Valley Northwest on Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
