Olathe South scored four unanswered touchdowns in the first half and rolled past Shawnee Mission West 42-21 on Thursday, Oct. 8, in a Week 6 Sunflower League district game.

The Falcons never trailed.

Olathe South led 7-0 after the first quarter, then piled on three more scores in the second. They pushed the lead to 28-0 before Shawnee Mission West found the end zone late in the half to make it 28-7 at the break.

The Falcons kept pushing in the third quarter. A touchdown with 10:07 remaining made it 35-7. The Vikings answered to cut the deficit to 35-13 by the end of the period, but Olathe South scored again in the fourth to go up 42-13. Shawnee Mission West added a late touchdown for the 42-21 final.

Athletic Director Andrew Miller posted score updates throughout the game on X, tracking each Falcons touchdown in real time.

The win snaps a two-game losing streak and improves Olathe South to 2-4 overall and 3-3 in Sunflower League play, according to MaxPreps. The Falcons opened the season 0-2, beat Olathe East 27-14 on Sept. 18, then dropped back-to-back games to Mill Valley and Shawnee Mission Northwest before Thursday's breakout.

It is the first season for head coach Reed Howard, a 2005 Olathe South graduate who was promoted from defensive coordinator. When he was introduced in February, Howard told KCTV5: "… I grew up in Olathe my whole life, and so getting the opportunity to lead our football program is truly a dream come true."

Shawnee Mission West entered the game winless. The Vikings lost to Lawrence Free State 37-13 in Week 1 and were shut out 51-0 by Mill Valley in Week 3, according to the Kansas City Star.

Olathe South travels to Shawnee Mission North on Friday, Oct. 16, for another district matchup. The Falcons close the regular season at Shawnee Mission South on Friday, Oct. 23.
