Scott Burgett, senior director of engineering for Garmin Health, took home the Corporate Visionary Award at Digital Health Day on Aug. 21, highlighting the Olathe-headquartered company's expanding role in health technology.
The award, called the Lumi Award for Corporate Visionary, recognizes a leader whose strategy is shaping the future of digital health. Burgett accepted it at The Abbott in Kansas City's East Crossroads neighborhood before a crowd of 950 founders, investors and partners drawn from 13 states for three days of panels, showcases and networking.
"We have survived for so long because we're very diverse, always looking for the next opportunity," Burgett said from the stage. "What's an adjacent market that we can get into with our technology? And we're very intentional about innovation. We invest a lot in innovation."
Garmin, headquartered at 1200 E. 151st St. in Olathe, is a $7 billion global company (NYSE: GRMN) that shipped 20 million products last year. Its Health division has been expanding partnerships across the digital health ecosystem, including a March 2026 integration with Natural Cycles, the only FDA-cleared birth control app, which uses skin temperature data from Garmin smartwatches to deliver fertility insights, according to a Garmin press release.
Elizabeth Shaffer, program director for Digital Health KC, said Garmin and Burgett are not just investing in their own success but partnering with the broader community and digital health startups, according to Startland News, which first reported the awards. Shaffer noted the event drew investors from 20 different firms and leaders from 10 innovation ecosystems.
Dick Flanigan, president of Digital Health KC, said the regional digital health sector remains healthy, with momentum in AI and companies raising capital and finding new clients.
Other Lumi Award honorees included Maria Meyers of the UMKC Innovation Center for Impact and Influence, Brandy Thompson of benefitbay for Company Growth, and Mark Hoffman of Children's Mercy Research Institute for Digital Pioneer.
On the enterprise side, Garmin Health has also been feeding readiness, sleep and heart-rate variability data into gym and fitness-operator platforms, according to Athletech News, allowing facilities to build recovery-informed programs for members. The recognition at Digital Health Day signals that Garmin's health partnerships extend well beyond consumer wearables into clinical and enterprise territory.
