Lenexa residents stuck on the city's community garden waiting list may finally get a plot of their own.

Crews are already excavating soil and installing water lines at Buffalo Meadows Park and Ad Astra Park, where Lenexa Parks & Recreation is building two new community gardens set to open for the 2027 season, according to a city announcement published Aug. 21.

The additions will bring Lenexa's total from three community garden sites to five. The city currently operates gardens at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, Electric Park and Scouting Park, where demand has outpaced supply and a waiting list is maintained for those interested in a plot.

The city said the new sites will substantially increase the number of available plots, though specific counts for either location have not been released.

Where the gardens are going

Buffalo Meadows Park is a 20.2-acre site with a jogging trail, open play space and parking. Ad Astra Park covers 10 acres next to Christa McAuliffe Elementary School and includes a 0.7-mile trail connecting to Ad Astra Trail.

Ad Astra Park is already seeing major investment this year. The rebuilt Ad Astra Pool reopened over Memorial Day weekend, and the city added year-round restrooms, renovated the park shelter and built a new access road for school traffic, according to Mayor Mike Sayers' 2026 State of the City address.

How to get on the list

The city has not yet opened applications for the 2027 plots. No completion date has been announced.
