Emily A. Porter, 53, of Lenexa died Monday, Sept. 14, after her vehicle crashed on Canyon Creek Boulevard following a welfare check, Lenexa police said.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez, a Lenexa Police Department spokesperson, said officers were dispatched at about 12:30 p.m. Porter had left a medical facility in the 23400 block of Prairie Star Parkway. AdventHealth Prairie Star is located at 23401 Prairie Star Parkway.

Officers went to Porter's home to conduct the welfare check. While they were there, Porter drove past them and accelerated away at a high rate of speed, Chavez said, according to the Johnson County Post.

"Officers activated their emergency equipment and attempted to catch up to the vehicle but remained a significant distance behind it," Chavez said.

Officers found Porter's vehicle crashed on Canyon Creek Boulevard near 100th Street, about 600 feet north of Kansas Highway 10. Porter was the vehicle's sole occupant and had been ejected, Chavez said. Officers began life-saving measures at the scene until Lenexa firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics arrived and continued those efforts.

Porter died at the scene.

The Kansas City Star first reported Porter's identity. Chavez released the details in a news release on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

As we reported on the Canyon Creek closure Tuesday, the crash shut down a stretch of the boulevard while investigators worked the scene. At that time, the victim's name and the welfare-check sequence had not been released.

A Johnson County Post reporter at the scene observed officers using a drone to document the wreck, which had toppled a street light pole and damaged its concrete base.

Lenexa police said a preliminary investigation indicates speed may have been a contributing factor, according to KCTV5. The full circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
