AARP Kansas named Olathe resident Susie Mize its 2026 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service winner for years of free tax-preparation work, the organization's highest volunteer honor.

Mize's service has centered on the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, known as VITA. The IRS-managed program provides free tax preparation and electronic filing for households earning $69,000 or less, according to Johnson County K-State Research and Extension. VITA has operated for more than 50 years.

Glenda DuBoise, AARP Kansas state director, said Mize's work has had "a meaningful impact on thousands of Kansans," according to the Olathe Reporter.

In Johnson County, the local VITA site is a partnership between K-State Research and Extension, El Centro Inc. and the Kansas City Metropolitan Tax Coalition. The site opens in early February and runs through April 15. Residents can learn more or sign up to volunteer by calling 913-715-7000.
