Lenexa's outdoor farmers market season ends Saturday, Oct. 31, after a six-month run that began in late April.
The Lenexa Farmers Market will be open 8 a.m. to noon at the civic campus parking garage, 17201 W. 87th St. Pkwy. The market features locally grown and made products from vendors within 250 miles or throughout Kansas, according to the city's event listing. SNAP benefits are accepted, and a Double Up Food Bucks match program is available.
Folk in the Flow performs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Three guest artists round out the final Saturday: E's Beads (jewelry), Mattison Central (3D-printed items) and Vijay's Unique Wood Art (wood-turned items).
The market's Saturday season ran from April 25 through Oct. 31.
Friday Night Sound Frights
The weekend starts Friday, Oct. 30, with two free events. The final Friday Night Sound Bites of the year carries a Halloween twist as "Friday Night Sound Frights" at the Lenexa Public Market, 8750 Penrose Lane.
Cantaloupe City plays outdoors on the Lower Commons from 7 to 10 p.m. An adult costume contest runs alongside the music, in which contestants must be present to win. Registration opens inside the market from 5 to 7 p.m., and winners will be announced at 7:30 p.m. Prizes are provided in collaboration with Made in KC. The first 20 people to register receive a free Public Market T-shirt.
A food truck will serve dinner from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., though the vendor had not been announced as of the city's latest event listing. The event is free, with no tickets or registration required to attend. In case of bad weather, the city said it will cancel the event, with a decision posted by 3 p.m. Friday.
Kid Zone Open House Night
Also on Friday, Oct. 30, the Lenexa Rec Center hosts a free Kid Zone Open House Night from 4 to 6 p.m. Children ages 11 and under can explore the Kid Zone, meet staff and play games on inflatables in the activity gym. No membership is needed. The rec center is at 17201 W. 87th St. Pkwy. Families can call 913-477-7529 for details.
Families should register each attendee through the city’s recreation website.
Document Shredding Event
On Saturday, Oct. 31, the city offers free on-site document shredding from 8 a.m. to noon at the Municipal Services Service Center, 7700 Cottonwood St. Residents can bring paper documents in bags or boxes. Paper clips, staples and binder clips are fine, but plastic binders and metal hanging folders are not accepted. Electronics, CDs and DVDs will not be taken.
Midwest Shredding handles the on-site shredding and provides certificates of destruction. Proof of Lenexa residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill, is required at the gate. The event is for residents only, not businesses, and may end early if the truck reaches capacity.
