Olathe broke ground on a new Fire Station 4 at 13301 S. Mur-Len Rd., replacing a 55-year-old facility that was demolished in September.
The Olathe Fire Department announced on Facebook that city leaders, firefighters and construction and design professionals gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony. The department said the new station will help maintain equitable emergency response coverage and better meet the demands of round-the-clock fire service.
The original Station 4 had a small footprint. It was built in 1971.
The city demolished the old station in September, according to the fire department. Station 4 crews have been reassigned to other Olathe stations while construction is underway.
Olathe City Councilmember LeEtta Felter wrote on Facebook that the station, located near Santa Fe Street and Mur-Len Road, was officially decommissioned on July 27. Felter noted that other stations are providing fire coverage in the area during the rebuild.
The Olathe Planning Commission approved the project’s final plat, FP26-0015, on July 27, 2026. The commission’s meeting record describes one lot on approximately 1.66 acres at 13301 S. Mur-Len Road.
The groundbreaking ceremony was limited to project partners rather than open to the public. The fire department cited safety concerns at the site, including heavy traffic volume and limited vehicle access along that stretch of Mur-Len Road.
The city's Station 4 project page lists additional details on the project's timeline, funding and construction partners. Residents needing fire services in the Station 4 coverage area can expect response from neighboring stations until the new facility opens.
