A piece of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center site is on public display at the Olathe Fire Administration building through Sept. 18.

The Olathe Fire Department announced on X that the Ground Zero steel is set up in the lobby of its headquarters at 1225 S. Hamilton Cir. Alongside the steel, the department has placed photos of the 343 FDNY firefighters who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers.

Those 343 deaths marked the largest single loss of life for any emergency response agency in history, according to the 9/11 Commission (formally the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States), as reported by FireRescue1. The firefighters came from 75 firehouses across New York City.

The display is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Olathe is one of several Kansas City-area communities that maintain memorials tied to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The Kansas City Star reported that Overland Park and Lawrence also host 9/11-related memorials and exhibits.

The 2001 attacks killed 2,977 people in New York, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Sept. 11 marks the anniversary of those attacks, and the Olathe lobby display will be accessible that day during regular hours.
