Junior quarterback Andre Day threw five touchdown passes as Olathe West beat Shawnee Mission Northwest 35-28 in overtime on Senior Night at CBAC. Cash Warren sealed the win with a fourth-down stop on the game's final play.
Day connected on long strikes of 55 yards to Caleb Swan and 44 yards to Cabe Roberson in the first quarter of the Friday, Oct. 9 game, the Owl Post reported. Senior Ryan Walsh added a fumble recovery on defense.
SMNW's flexbone offense answered. The Cougars took a 21-14 lead into halftime and extended the margin to two scores in the second half.
Day brought the Owls back.
He lofted a 63-yard touchdown pass to Roberson in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to seven. After senior Wyatt Benton recorded a sack on third down to force a Cougar punt, Day led a tying drive that ended with a four-yard scoring pass to Swan in the corner of the end zone. The catch knotted the score at 28-28.
SMNW had one last chance in regulation. At the Olathe West 27-yard line with six seconds left, the Cougars opted to run another play rather than attempt a field goal. The play came up short, sending the game to overtime.
Head coach Jon Wiemers dialed up a trick play on the Owls' first overtime possession. Senior tackle Brayden Shin went in motion, pulling the defense out of position and leaving senior tight end Alex Morrison wide open for the go-ahead score.
Then the defense finished it. SMNW gained nothing on three plays. On fourth down, senior linebacker Cash Warren committed to Northwest Missouri State, chased the Cougar quarterback out of the pocket and dropped him for the game-ending stop.
The win moved Olathe West to 4-2 and avenged a 52-33 loss to SMNW last season, the Owls' only regular-season defeat.
Now comes the biggest test of the season. The Owls travel to Mill Valley on Thursday, Oct. 15 for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the undefeated Jaguars (6-0). Mill Valley has won every game this season by at least 14 points, according to the Owl Post. Applebee entered this season with seven Class 5A state championships and a 143-43 record across 16 seasons, Mill Valley News reported.
Olathe West beat Mill Valley 52-36 at the Swamp last season. Shawnee Mission East remains on the Owls' schedule after the Mill Valley game.
