Gardner-Edgerton's 33-27 win over Olathe Northwest vaulted the Trailblazers two spots to No. 3 in the Class 6A football rankings released Monday, Sept. 28.
The rankings, first reported by the Wichita Eagle and compiled by Taylor Eldridge, evaluate each team's body of work through four weeks of the 2026 season.
Gardner-Edgerton (3-1) jumped from No. 5 after knocking off the No. 8 Ravens. Olathe Northwest (2-2) held at No. 8 despite the loss.
That result reshuffled the local 6A picture. Olathe North (2-2) landed in the Class 6A "first five out" after Shawnee Mission Northwest's 35-34 comeback win bumped the Eagles from the top 10. SM Northwest entered at No. 10. Olathe West (2-2) also sits in the first five out.
Olathe South (1-3) is unranked after a 63-21 loss to No. 1 Mill Valley. Olathe East lost 48-13 to No. 5 Lawrence.
Two 5A teams stay unbeaten
Across the classification line, De Soto and Spring Hill remain the area's hottest teams. Both are 4-0.
De Soto held steady at No. 6 in Class 5A after a 42-21 road win at Kansas City Piper. The Wildcats host Lansing (2-2) in Week 5.
Spring Hill climbed one spot to No. 7 after shutting out Basehor-Linwood 24-0 on Friday, Sept. 25. The game was a United Kansas Conference matchup, as KSHSAA noted on Sept. 28. It also served as Spring Hill's homecoming. Head coach Fred Bouchard's Broncos travel to Shawnee Heights (1-3) next.
Kapaun Mt. Carmel (4-0) holds the No. 1 spot in 5A. St. James Academy (3-1) falls to No. 3.
Week 5 matchups to watch
Gardner-Edgerton travels to No. 9 Shawnee Mission East (2-2). Olathe Northwest hosts Olathe North in a battle of 2-2 squads with playoff implications. SM Northwest visits Olathe South.
